e discovery | Dodging e discovery disasters with three best practices

Over the course of April and May, Digital Reef hosted a three part webinar series on “eDiscovery Best Practices” led by industry experts. The webinars addressed many eDiscovery issues and gave insight into how to avoid eDiscovery disasters, while also providing a variety of ways to implement new eDiscovery strategies. The webinar series did so by fostering many lively discussions and providing all participants with relatable real world examples.
Colby Dyess, Product Management Director for Digital Reef, served as the moderator of the first webinar. Colby told the participants, “Your team and your processes typically handle an average number of cases and an average amount of data. However, sudden spikes in either caseload or data volume can create tremendous pressure to process and review more electronically stored information in the same amount or less time. Today’s panelists are going to describe how organizations are affected today, and recommend steps to avoid or mitigate the challenges of burst capacity needs.”
When the amount of Electronically Stored Information grows, the pressure to process and review this data quickly in order to satisfy administrative deadlines and judicial scheduling can be almost unbearable. The first webinar in the Best Practices served as an aid to legal teams who face the constant risk of burst capacity, what Digital Reef refers to as the underbelly of the eDiscovery beast. A lively discussion was held among industry participants who had past experiences in responding to growing demands and unplanned caseloads. The webinar gave insight in how to avoid very costly mistakes by learning from real world scenarios. Panelist for this webinar included Cliff Dutton, President of Dutton LLC, Wuk Kim, Director of Electronic Data Services for CopiSolutions, and Michael McClelland, Senior Systems Engineer at Digital Reef Inc. All panelist members spoke of their own experiences, and provided the participants with ways to avoid eDiscovery disasters.
How can you find a balance? This was the question addressed in the second webinar of the series. To most effectively control eDiscovery, legal teams must find just the right mix of in-house staffing and outsourced services to handle all discovery matters. The webinar, led by panelists Barry Murphy, the Co-Founder and CEO of the eDiscovery Journal, and Kevin Esposito, a Contributing Analyst of the eDiscovery Journal, provided participants with examples of ways to develop a repeatable and defensible discovery process to implement as future strategy.
The final webinar focused on the Software as a Service model, otherwise known as SaaS, and how this model can improve responsiveness while lowering capital expenses and risk. Panelists for this webinar included Daniel Garrie, ESQ Special Master/Mediator in eDiscovery, David Whitehead, Director of Hildebrant Baker Robbins, and Colby Dyess, Director of Product Management at Digital Reef. The webinar gave a clear view into the world of SaaS based eDiscovery, why it’s important and how clients can and are benefitting from it.
